The conventional pose adopted by the sitter is the one that frequently occurs in the works from the Deccan. This portrait of Tipu Sultan expresses the dramatic intensity of mood and also bring to the surface the inner feelings of the sitter. This portrait, with the sultan's face in profile shows him clad in a green striped tunic with long sleeves. It is tied at the waist by a thickly folded sash into which is tucked the royal sword. He also wears a similar green turban, roped with pearls and surmounted by an aigrette. Sitting against an orange bolster, his posture and attitude capture his firm resolve.
In warfare, in state craft, in sound judgement and administration, he had no one to rival or equal him. These qualities of the mind and action enabled him to rise to the eminence. This portrait amply reveals the sultan's inherent inner personality.
The background is plain and simple compared to the complexity of the portrait. A clear sky of cerulean blue with darker shades on the top make the only background. Although the artist uses limited colours here, he has used them judiciously.
