This beautiful 32 inch x 44 inch Batik painting on cotton depicts the third of the Ten Mahavidyas, Shodashi--known also as Tripura Sundari, She Who is Lovely in the Three Worlds--resting on a lotus seat laid on a throne above a lounging Lord Shiva. According to the Srikula texts of Shaktism, Tripura Sundari is the highest of the Mahavidyas and the supreme manifestation of Goddess Adi Parashakti. According to the Tripura Upanishad, Shodashi is the ultimate Shakti, or energy, of the universe. She is also the supreme consciousness, ruling above Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra and Ishwara. Tripura Sundari is also the foremost goddess associated with the Shakta Tantric tradition known as Sri Vidya.
