Tantra, while a counterpart of the Agamas and the Samhitas, has significantly more esoteric, even twisted, connotations in the deep religious East, The Shiva painting in water colours that you see on this page is an example as it depicts the Tantric roopa of the all-annihilating Lord.

The body of Shiva is split into two. At the heart is a white trident. On either side of the white trident is a contorted limb. Wound around each limb is a thick, black lock of hair. Immediately below the white trident is the naked imagery of the life-giving process.

The face of Shiva could almost be described as disturbing. He has three eyes and fangs, with the tongue sticking out as an expression of divine wrath. White tridents tattooed on His cheeks, the male reproductive organ on either side of the third eye. A thousand-petalled halo surrounding solid black contours.
