A tall Sikh gentleman, elderly in age dressed in officer's uniform is part of the 15th Lancers. A full sleeved, blush-grey tunic with white trousers and long, black boots is his regular uniform. The slick turban has a striped band in front, a conical projection in the middle and a tail. A sash is tied over the tunic on the waist, almost reaching up to the lower chest ; the ends of the sash fall down gracefully over the sash is a belt, in order to secure the former. His white trousers are tucked in the shiny, black boots. In his left hand he holds a sheathed lancer. The standing pose is quite rigid and stiff, despite the lower limbs positioned to show a relaxed manner.
The expression of the face is relevant here. The artist has revealed a whole lot of things in it. The face shows the middle age; his discontent with the changing scenario of that time and his complacency. The artist has used a few colours but various hues and tones of those basic colours.
