The dark and handsome Lord Rama is seated within the belly of a levitating lotus. He has a bow laid across His lap and an arrow in His right hand. The weapon is indispensable to the iconography of the prince of Ayodhya, because these are what He went to battle with and these are what won Him back His Seeta from the clutches of King Ravana.
She is seated right next to Him. Clad in a gossamer dress that is a testament to Her beauty of form and complexion, She is turned towards Him. At Her Lord and Master She gazes with deep faith and devotion. Semblances of Vishnu and Lakshmi, of whom they are the avataras, are to be found in the peeta dhoti of Rama and the lotus in Seeta’s fair hands.
A brilliant sun frames the tiny central ensemble. Its vivid colour contrasts sharply with the dusky complexion of Rama’s form. A large, expressive face is drawn into the solar halo, featuring a Vaishnavite tilaka on the circular forehead. This symbolism is a nod to the solar ancestry of Rama (Sooryavanshi), who belongs to the Ikshvaku dynasty.
