The childlike Ganesha is seated under a gold Kirtimukham archway. His chubby child’s legs are gathered in a rudimentary bhadrasana before Him, while His gaze is directed straight ahead. The twin qualities of wisdom and innocence pour forth from His brow. The widely adored son of Shiva-Parvati, Ganesha’s roseate complexion almost blends in with the gold of the embellishments in this Tanjore-style composition.
The image of the Lord Ganesha is embossed on a panel of wood. It comes into view when panes of a makeshift door are drawn open. As such, it is a temple-structure composition that is fit to grace the home or office of the truly devoted. The silhouette of the temple is simple yet, expressive. A luxuriant sprig of multicoloured vine graces the zenith of the slanting roof of the mandir.
The artisan’s attention to detail makes this a desirable purchase for the Ganesha devotee. Colour-blocked pillars on either side of the hinges. On the doors, pictures of devotees in richly coloured attire paying varying kinds of homage to the Lord are arranged in panels. A row of coops along the lower edge where one may put away knick-knacks essential to ritual worship.
