In this Tanjore painting, stars are dusted across the night sky against which stands a peacock, majestic and graceful. It’s body is the colour of pink tulips and feet the colour of gudhal. Its feathers are unfurled in an incandescent gold, looking sublime in their curvature. The coil of its neck, too, is decorated and embossed in gold. It looks at the viewer directly and confidently. It is a symbol of grace and beauty.
In Hindu mythology and stories, the peacock makes an appearance again and again, sacred in its very existence. Believed to have been created from the plumage of Garuda, the mythical bird, the peacock is seen as the Vahan (vehicle) of Kartikeya. Shri Krishna, the perfect lover, is crowned with peacock feathers on his head, vibrant and playful. The supreme being Vishnu’s consort Lakshmi is also often symbolized by a peacock. Goddess Saraswati, the deity of music and knowledge, is associated with this beautiful bird too in the form of Citramekhala. In her company, the bird represents patience, kindness, and compassion, along with knowledge. As it looks out with its sharp gaze, it is abundantly clear that he has all the right to be proud of who it is.
