In many narrative paintings, there is an assemblage of popular episodes from the Ramayana, but here is a single episode depicted in an entire painting. Tall and slender Sita looks mesmerizing. Rama in his glory looks awesome with his elongated torso accentuating his powerful personality. After lifting Shiva's mighty bow and breaking it into two, Rama marries Sita, which is the scene of action here. Their earthly marriage merely duplicates the heavenly union of Rama and Sita, since he is Vishnu incarnate and she is an aspect of Lakshmi, his eternal companion. Forming a canopy over their heads is the tree of life- 'Parijata'. This heavenly tree sprung up during the churning of the ocean.
