Lord Ranganatha is a form of the great Vishnu as He is worshipped in South India. The iconography derives from the ancient temple of Ranganathaswamy in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu. Like the Sheshashayi Vishnu, or Vishnu in the lying stance (‘shayi’) upon Sheshanaga (‘naga’ is Sanskrt for serpent), Rangantha also reclines nestled within the coils of Adishesha.
The beauty and value of the traditional Tanjore painting lies in metallic embellishments. Gold-layered gessowork is the identifying feature of the authentic Thanjavur painting. The work of Thanjavur art that you see on this page is strategically - and luxuriantly - inlaid with pure, fluid gold. The same is characterised by a variety of textures and colours introduced into the metallic sections, such as the crimson brushstrokes on Ranganatha’s dhoti, the perfectly uniform scales on the coils of Adishesha, and the miniscule jewel-like stones embedded into the Lord’s adornment. Given the wealth of detail introduced into each unit of the canvas’ surface area, this Thanjavur painting qualifies as a complex work of art.
