Would anyone give a daughter's hand in marriage to a half naked, inebriated mendicant who smears his body with ash, rides a bull and has serpents round his neck? This is how Shiva's procession proceeded to his brides house. Following him are the celestial beings, humans and most importantly the ganas comprising of hooligans, gnomes and goblins, fiendish creatures.
The decorations of the wedding hall divide the canvas horizontally. The lower half depict the wedding and related celebrations. In the middle, Shiva and Parvati sit in front of the sacred fire, following marriage rites. Around them, the gods and humans rejoice at the union, the women dancing and singing. The whole canvas is complete with activity and colour. The eye gets no respite from the overcrowding figures.
