Seated on a tiger skin is Shiva in his Ardhnarishvara, androgynous form, his left half female, subsuming within himself, his divine consort Parvati and thus becoming purusha and prakriti conjoined in one. However they both maintain their independent identity and appearance. While Shiva's hair is matted, Parvati's is flowing. The river Ganges emerges from the topknot of Shiva's hair. Shiva wears a garland of human heads and ornaments like kundalas, bracelets, armlets and anklets. Blue of body, he holds a serpent in his hand. Partially within the frame is Shiva's vehicle, Nandi the Bull. A trident and a drum are two of Shiva's most popular emblems, which can be seen on Shiva's side. The female half of the biune image is equally resplendent. From the curling locks to her delicate feet, Parvati is a picture of grace.
The background is devoid of everything but a horizontal stretch of a skyline. The foreground is, on the other hand, pictorially cluttered what with a lotus pond, over which is a lotus carpet and then spread the tiger skin.
