In the classic visual language of Mewar paintings, this beautiful watercolor on hard paper artwork brings the scene of gods and goddesses’ visit to Kailasha to seek the benevolence of Shiva and Parvati. Legends from the Puranas narrate stories where gods and goddesses, when faced with the armies of demons and imbalance in the Universe, approach Mahadeva for the annihilation of evil and restoration of balance.

The center of the canvas is given to Shiva and Parvati, beautifully adorned, seated on tiger and elephant skin mats respectively. Parvati gracefully holds a cup, offering it to Shiva, who gently leans toward her, creating a lovely picture of togetherness and affection between Shiva and Shakti. The perfection of innocent devotion to their parents, Karttikeya and Ganesha stand near Shiva, with Ganesha holding a fly whisk and Karttikeya joining his hands in Namaskar. The two-headed deity standing next to Ganesha is probably Agni, who is evoked in scriptures as having two faces, one calm and the other vigorous.

On the side of Parvati are various goddesses playing musical instruments, singing the praises of Shiva and Parvati. Near the towering Kailasha mount are Brahma and Vishnu mounted on Garuda and in the background is the Sun or Suryadeva, peeking from behind the mountain to gaze at this heavenly scene.

The foreground of the painting is marked by the presence of Nandi, and the sacred river Ganga, emerging from Gomukha (literally, cow’s mouth) depicted astutely in the lower right section of the artwork. A traditional floral border surrounds the scene, giving it the beauty of classic Rajput miniatures.
