This painting portrays the maintainer and sustainer of the entire Universe, Lord Vishnu. Tanjore paintings are known for their use of bright and vivid colors, and embellishment of the devotional icons with pure gold. Lord Vishnu expands Himself into Garbhodakshayi Vishnu for maintaining the material creation and Kshirodakshayi Vishnu for guiding the living entities to inquire about the Absolute Truth.
Here, the Lord is depicted lying calmly on the coils of the divine Sheshnaag or Anantashesha. The multiple hoods of Sheshnaag form a canopy above the head of the Lord. The complexion of Vishnu is just like the color of fresh monsoon clouds. Clad in a Pitambar (bright yellow) dhoti, and adorned with a Vaijanti mala (flower garland) and a necklace containing the effulgent Kaustubha gem, He appears like the glowing Sun. After the annihilation of the universe, the three-headed Lord Brahma emerges on a lotus flower from the navel of Lord Vishnu, who then creates the universe and the cycle of birth and death starts again. Two Goddesses of fortune (Lakshmi) can be seen serving the lotus feet of the Lord with love and devotion. This painting takes one to the state of pure bliss and gives the essence of being present in Vaikuntha, the place of no miseries.
