A mother to her child is the first guide, their home, and school all at once. It is through her eyes that we see the world, with her legs, bundled up in her lap we travel the world and through her language, we are introduced to the beauty of the world. In this acrylic on canvas, Usha Shantharam remembers the unparalleled significance of a mother for her child, who depends on her for every little sensation and joy of life.
Using a blissful blue backdrop, Shantharam beautifully highlights the presence of the mother and child who stand at the center of the canvas. The mother has her back to the audience, but the beauty and warmth of her presence can be felt by the comfort on the face of the child and the ambiance of the artwork. Draped in a white saree with ethnic patterns, the mother wears simple jewelry- a neck chain and ear studs along with red bangles. The child is dressed in a printed shirt and has a bracelet in his hand. Placing it on the shoulder of his mother, he turns around, meeting the eyes of the audience to bring our attention to the canvas with his animated gaze.
The mother gently bends forward to pick a flower, which probably the child has asked for, charmed by its vivid color. After pleading with his mother for the flower, the child seems to have forgotten about his wish for a moment as his attention shifts to something outside the canvas. However, for the mother, the ardent wish of the apple of her eye has become her only focus for the time.
