Devi Bhuvaneshvari is the wife of Lord Trayambaka (a manifestation of Lord Shiva) and a Mahavidya in Her own right. She is one of the dasamahavidyas or the ten (‘dasa’) Devis of great (‘maha’) awareness (‘vidya’) and, like the rest of the Devis in the Mahavidya pantheon, She is beauteous and invincible. Devi Bhuvaneshvari is the Brahmashakti Herself (Lord Trayamabaka is Brahman). She is Moolaprakrti (fundamental matter principle), while He is Adipurusha (timeless energy principle). It is She who projected the three forms of Lord Trayambaka, Brahma-Vishnu-Rudra, as well as their respective shaktis, Sarasvati-Lakshmi-Kali.

Seated in padmasana upon a moist lotus that blooms in the waters of the Ganga, The iconography of Devi Bhuvaneshvari is in keeping with the traditional Mahavidya imagery. She is the Shashtabhujadharini, the one possessed of (‘dharini’) six (‘shashta’) arms (‘bhuja’), in which She bears fresh lotus blooms and weapons which She wields against adharma in any form. She has the roopa (form) of an irresistible, youthful maiden - luscious locks cascading down the length of Her back, full breasts supported by a small waist, and flawless supple limbs. Her complexion is as fair as the petals of the lotus She is seated on. The hills in the backdrop are as lofty as Her person, the skies as full of life and radiance as She.
