Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings display a special place in his heart for the tale of Shakuntala. In this reproduction of his work, Shakuntala is in the forest with her two Sakhis who hold floral baskets in their hands and chat merrily. The three of them are dressed in dhoti (lower garment) and Kuchabandha (breast cloth), along with floral ornaments. An old lady leads this group. Stopping for a moment, Shakuntala looks back, as if looking back at her time spent with Dushyant, yearning for his presence and contemplating the state of her life.
