Shaivite Yogini Blessing a New Born Child

$840

Scenes of Tirthas or pilgrimage spots, filled with devotion and sacredness of the divine were a common theme in medieval Indian paintings, possessing which was considered equal to having the honor of having visited the Tirtha. Here is one such picture, made with watercolor, fine lines, and classical Mughal foliage on the frame, giving the artwork a timeless aesthetic appeal.

Surrounded by lush green hills, is a Shaiva shrine, being visited by female devotees, engaged in various acts of devotion. One bows down in front of the Shiva linga in the sanctum, another takes a ritual bath in the lotus-filled sacred lake in the foreground, while another one sits near an ethereal-looking Yogini (female ascetic), with her child in her arms. The Yogini accompanied by her student initiate, offers her blessings and Prasad (ritual food offering) to the child.

A marvelously delineated scene of Bhakti, this watercolor painting carries within it the purity of faith and devotion-  virtues that characterize India as the home of the divine.
