Bedecked in gold and decorated with gleaming, many-hued stones, this Tanjore painting sets the scene for Lord Rama’s homecoming. The godly trio of Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Laxman return twenty days after Ravana was slayed. They sit in a mythical aircraft, called the Pushpak Viman, offered to them by Vibhishan once he was crowned the king of Lanka. His skin is a shade darker than the lotus complexion of his two companions, a color that makes him the beloved of his people and seems like the night itself.
They ride into the darkness of the black backdrop straight to Ayodhya, where his loyal subjects and brothers await. On the left stand Hanuman, the true devotee of Rama, and Bharata, Rama’s brother who had been ruling Ayodhya in his stead. On the right stand his loyal subjects. A fire burns steadily in welcome as the city celebrates in joy. Pleasant clouds gather around in the sky to watch this too. Everyone in the painting is dressed in gold regalia. It is their way of honoring this momentous occasion. In the battle of good and evil, good persists once again as Rama has defeated Ravana. This painting freezes this joyous moment eternally.
