The counterpart of Shiva- Maheshwar in the Sapta-Matrika cluster is known as Maheshwari (literally, the one who emerged from Maheshwar). Due to her associations with the daughter of the Himalaya Parvati, Maheshwari often has a skin colour similar to the snow-capped mountains. The damru (hand drum) and trident held by Maheshwari hints at her linkages with Shiva, who is usually seen with these attributes.
According to one fascinating lore in Hinduism, when the goddess Kali accompanied by other Devis was conquering Raktabija, her war-cry gave birth to goddess Brahmani, and from her eyebrows emerged Maheshwari. The goddess wears a saffron-coloured sari- a shade that represents austerities, yogic powers, and purity, attributes associated with her counterpart, Shiva.
