An abstract oil painting of Kashi, better known as Banaras. It is a composite of the visual elements one usually associates with the ancient city. At the centre is the ashen countenance of a sadhu or ascetic. Beneath the ochre and vermillion tilaka on his brow, those piercing eyes form the focus of the composition.

To the left of his cheek, a small cluster of the ancient stone structures dotting the ghats (banks) of Kashi. To those who have been to Kashi, the interplay of light and shade against cold stone textures is remarkably realistic.

Finally, boat imagery abound in this composition. A total of four of them in full view, with the stern of a bigger one painted across the canvas such as to accommodate the smaller ones. Prussian blue and charcoal colour-blocked background adds to the sattvik solemnity of the painting.
