A brilliant amalgam known as the Mughal style of painting was neither Persian, nor indigenous, but a happy synthesis of the best of both. Portraits of humans, birds and animals were the hallmark of the Mughal school.

The dignity and importance of a fine steed is well portrayed here. Contrary to the Persian mode of depicting animals which is purely linear and descriptive in character, the animal is portrayed here as an 'individual' with emphasis on physiognomy. This painting shows minimum action but then it is not action but technical finesse and refined workmanship in a more restrained manner that makes this picture valuable.

The isolated figure dominates the composition. A stiff depiction of the neck and firm and bold curves of the back betray some rigidity in the drawing, but is greatly relieved by the anatomical correctness of the pose. There is deep shading and heavy modeling employed to highlight the contours and various parts of the body. The artist makes minute distinctions in the texture and patterning of the different parts and is detailed and precise in observation. The lines have swift vitality and independent rhythms. The artist has accurately described visual traits and pleasingly balanced the various elements of the work. Attention is paid to the use of pigments that reflect the actual color of the subject.

A subdued background throws up the animal figure in relief. In the treatment of the background, a natural representation of distance is attempted with considerable success.
