A procession afore the Jama Masjid in Delhi. Could be either before or after it became the capital of India. Perhaps the royalty in the picture is on a special commission in the region and longed, one quiet afternoon, to see the ethereal domes of the famous masjid.
He is seated perfectly shaded in a chariot upholstered with scarlet velvet and gold brocade. His personal bodyguard is immediately behind him on the same chariot. Behind his chariot, follows a retinue. From their style of dress and turban, they seem to be royals of the Delhi Sultanate.
There is a realistic quality to every form in this painting. From the people in the background to the horses and people in the foreground. There is also dynamism in their respective stances. Charming use of colour in gradient style across the canvas.
