In India, rivers are given a divine status. The two rivers, Ganga and Yamuna, have been worshipped since ancient times. Ganga, the chief of the sacred streams of India, whose waters are said to have the power of cleansing from all past, present and future sins, is believed to be divine.

The Gangadhara legend traces the origin of the river Ganges to Heaven. Ganga had to be persuaded to descend to the earth to enable the ancestors of king Bhagiratha to ascend to heaven.

Dyed in the technique of batik is Ganga in her iconic form. She is seated on a lotus placed on the body of the alligator. Ganga is always associated with the alligator and Yamuna with a tortoise which is the most relevant difference between the two river goddesses. She is wearing a gem encrusted crown but the rest of the jewellery is subtle. Wearing a green saree and a gentle expression on her face, she is holding a water pot in one hand and a lotus flower in the other.

The artist has cleverly used blue for the background to represent the ocean. Liberally used green represents fertility and abundance.
