A divine image of Devi Lakshmi. Wife of Lord Vishnu, and the presiding deity over wealth and resources, She is depicted in Her solitary glamour as the chaturbhujadharini, the one possessed of (‘dharini’) four (‘chatur’) arms (‘bhuja’). Seated in the mouth of a gigantic lotus bloom, the legs gathered in lalitasana as is the norm in Hindu iconography. In a pool of delicately still waters it grows, amidst a plethora of lotuses and lilies, on a pad of which perches an owl (the vahana or mount of Devi Lakshmi). Zoom in on the serene, human features of its face.
Of superior beauty and bearing, the image of Devi Lakshmi has been executed with solid black lines of varying thickness. These define the full contours of Her body and add detail to Her complex shringar. From the cygnine features of Her face to the exquisite curves of Her digits, the artist has infused each aspect of the Deviroopa (‘roopa’ is Sanskrt for form) with equal parts skill and equal parts shraddha (roughly translated as devotion). The richly detailed halo complements the density of Her shringar and the glamour of Her cosmic prowess.
There is an unmistakable harmony of proportion in the overall composition. There are shrubs and bulrushes growing in the silt on either side of the central figure, and an arch like a temple entrance frames it along the top. Such a powerful work of art is sure to bring in the blessings of Lakshmi to your hearth.
