Melodies and emotions are depicted through colors, the tradition of Ragamala in Indian art has for long relied on colors to instill Rasa (emotive juices) in the audience. A contemporary twist on this tradition of the marriage of music and colors, “Rangat” by Hina Sudhir Mahuvagara uses a horizontally laid canvas and four female musicians to create a scenic effect. Intense red, the color of passion is used on the background of two musicians, while the two in the center have a glowing yellow, the color of austerity and divinity.
Playing cymbals, Ektara (a single-stringed instrument), Dhol (drum), and flute, the four women seem immersed in the ambiance they create. Beginning as an expression of love and passion for the external world, the effect of the melodies becomes sacred as they intensify, which is symbolized by a brilliant transition from red, and orange to yellow on the canvas. Delicate lotuses bloom in the foreground, adding to the beauty of the scene, as motifs of nature’s bliss caused by the riveting music of the entranced subjects of this oil on canvas.
