Raga Panchama is one of the sons of Raga Bhairava and is associated with autumn. In Kangra Ragamala pictures, he is shown as a young prince fondling a family of deer, seated on a chauki, on the bank of a lotus lake. Panchama is sung at a high pitch. It is one of the oldest ragas, and was once regarded as one of the six principal ragas. Later on it was replaced by Raga Malkaus, and became a subordinate raga. It is performed in autumn at the close of night.

There is a common belief that herds of deer are attracted by music. "I have been assured by a credible eyewitness," says Sir William Jones, "that two wild antelopes used often to come from the woods, to the place where Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula entertained himself with concerts and that they listened to the strains with an appearance of pleasure." The leaves and flowers of the lotus are in wild disarray in this painting, as if intoxicated with the rich and delicate music of Raga Panchama.
