Radha and Krishna are an amorous couple. Unlike Shiva-Parvati, who are a unit of cosmic significance according to Samkhya, or Rama-Seeta, epitome of the idealisation of samsaara, Radha-Krishna stand for sheer love and companionship. The painting that you see on this page depicts the two of them in an act of unbridled romance, that of one feeding the other.
The fair hand of Radha holds up a morsel to Her lover’s mouth. He is gazing directly into Her face as She feeds Him, whilst She is barely able to raise Her eyes to meet His. In a marble enclosure they sit; Krishna on a luxuriously upholstered seat of gold. She is in a crimson-coloured lehenga that brings out Her complexion, while He is in a dhoti of golden yellow silk.
A pair of peacocks totter about in the foreground. Along the thick edges of the painting, a series of cow motifs, interspersed with lotus blooms, frames the Radha-Krishna composition.
