Radha and Krishna and their amorous encounters serve the most varied purposes, from those that were deeply religious to those that were plainly sentimental and erotic; from psychological studies to genre scenes. Gitagovinda and the Bhagwata, classics having intrinsic literary merit exalt Radha as a strikingly compelling woman: beautiful, aloof, proud, sensitive, brooding and passionate.

Radha of our painting has all of these qualities. Churning milk at the break of dawn, she waits for her beloved Krishna. Despite its wealth of erotic undertones, the legend of the two contains symbolic meanings, transforming amorous summons into divine communication and inspiring poets and artists alike. The form of Radha is crisply and clearly defined. The clothing is not projected by angular flat shapes and sharp lines, but is realistically soft and transparent. The delicate movement of her hands churning, make the painting come alive, filling it with rhythm and grace. The vacuous look in Radha's eyes conceal longing and desire.

The architecture is freely drawn and unmeasured, giving it spontaneity and vivacity. The architectural pattern, the textiles, well defined foliage and the distant landscape, all draw and hold our attention. The balance of the composition is unaffected by the intensity of the expression, which is intended to focus attention on Radha's face and gestures.

It is a painting amalgamating various traditions of paintings in an exquisite blend. The features and facial expressions are typical of the local schools of art that developed after the fall of the Mughal empire, the curly clouds remind us of Chinese prints and the marginal calligraphy is Islamic. This one painting shows clear artistic determination and a refined taste.
