Mughal paintings must always rank proudly in the comparative scales of the world's art, for its singularity of style, originality and its superb drawing.

This portrait of the Mughal emperor Akbar is painted in strident, vibrant and expressive colours. Set against a striped bolster, Akbar stands elegantly holding a falcon on his wrist. The green jama with floral embroidery is off set by a red patka. The attire is completed by a small turban with a 'kalgi' and 'sarpech' and a plume. Other ornaments won by him are simpler and non descript. The falcon too wears a pendant on a string. The ferocity of the bird is reflected in the curve of its beak and its narrow eyes. In total contrast is the gentle expression of the king's face. The rounded face has gentle eyes, a shapely nose and though the lips are not smiling, they do not look grim either. There is subtle modelling of the features, so essential to the life and character of the person depicted. It is a remarkable portrait painted with restrained manual dexterity and brilliant colours.
