Standing against a beautifully rendered background is a royal dignitary. Perfectly chiselled features make him look extraordinary. He wears a turban with a broad band and a simple string of pearls. His jama with long sleeves is transparent, showing off his tight trousers beneath; the patka on the sash is tied securely at the waist; the shoes, however, are evident of the European influence in the later Mughal period. The sword hangs down his waist, partially concealed by a large black shield. His pose is a typic hieratic one with the hand crossing on the hilt of the sword only here the sword is painted far below, making the pose redundant. The pose however retains the grace, and together with subdued colours and the pensive face presents an overall mood of restrained dignity.
The foreground is dotted with tiny flowers. A thinly branched flowering tree forms a canopy over his head. There is a horizontal representation of the sky at the upper edge.
