The phrase, As Proud as a Peacock’, comes to life in this Tanjore style painting. The hauteur and pride in its beauty are visible in the proud tilt of the bird’s head, and the expression in its eyes. The golden plumage with its whorls and twirls is a visual feast for the eyes. The intricate design on the tail feathers suggests that the several eyes dotting them, are closed. They open up when these feathers arrange themselves in the shape of a fan. Even the neatly arranged feathers on the back, are at rest. The framework is simple, with a simple embellishment in the background, for this beautiful National Bird of India needs no external adornments.
The peacock represents immortality, purity, and royalty. It is why it is the chosen vehicle/mount of Lord Murugan/Subramanya Swamy/Karthikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. Lord Murugan’s mount was originally an asura/demon, Surapadman. Lord Murugan defeated him in battle. Surapadman turned himself into a tree, hoping to escape. However, he soon found himself divided into two halves. One half was reborn as a rooster, becoming the Lord’s emblem. The other half emerged as a peacock and became his mount for traveling the skies.
