Mriga or deer in the philosophy of Hinduism represents the human soul or aatman, which wanders in the vast wilderness of this Samsara, caught in the cycle of Kaala or time. This strife of the soul with the unending circle of time has been profoundly narrated in this watercolor painting, depicting a multiple-bodied but single-headed figure of a deer, in the coils of a giant serpent, which is an ancient Indian symbol for eternity. The deer is in the jaws of the serpent, and appears almost lifeless, in front of the voraciousness of the Naga. With its simple aesthetics, the artwork outlines the condition of the soul caught in the passage of time and inspires the onlooker to search for the remedy, which lies on the path of spiritual awakening.
