Palden Lhamo, the fierce Goddess in Tibetan Buddhism means the “Glorious Goddess,” also called Shri Devi in Sanskrit. She is the wrathful emanation of Goddess Chamunda. As a wrathful deity, she embodies both fierceness and compassion, depicted with a blue-black complexion and three eyes representing her omniscience.
She is depicted as riding on a mule, she traverses the universe, adorned with a crown of skull and necklace of human heads, symbolizing her triumph over death and impermanence. Her weapon skull cup filled with blood, a flaying knife, and a lasso– illustrate her ability to overcome obstacles, cut through ignorance, and bind negativity.
Devotees invoke her protection against obstacles and malevolent forces, acknowledging her role as a guardian of Buddhist teachings and sentient beings.
