When after a conflict in which Shiva and Parvati disappeared from the world, living beings faced the threat of starvation and annihilation. The mother who bore and nurtured all beings was gone, and with her went away the nourishing food. Shiva went in search of a solution and found that in Kashi, goddess Parvati had opened a kitchen for her children, to feed and replenish those who were suffering. Accepting his defeat, Shiva visited the court of Annapurna (Parvati), as a Bhikshuk, asking for alms and was bestowed by the supreme mother with ample food.
This watercolor on paper painting depicts the scene of Shiva’s visit to Annapurna, as it lives in the memory and religious tradition of Hinduism. As a royal queen, Annapurna sits in the center, radiating the aura of a queen. Her beautiful red saree, gemmed ornaments, halo, Chattra, or royal umbrella shading her, and her graceful pose express sovereignty, contrasted by the downward gaze of Shiva, whose demeanor is that of a seeker, asking for help.
The attendants of Annapurna stand behind her, coyly smiling at this Lila of their divine queen. The interiors of the goddess’s palace have been delineated with vivid colors that suggest grandeur and regalia. In the backdrop through the window, flowing Ganga River and temple clusters are visible to locate the event in the city of Shiva and Annapurna-Kashi.
