One of the eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi (Ashtalakshmi), Gajalakshmi is one of the most hallowed incarnations. She is known to be the mainstay of splendour, wealth, grace, prosperity, and power. Legend has it, Goddess Lakshmi, along with Gajendra, the elephant, were devout worshippers of Lord Vishnu and were always absorbed in this task. However, his belly was mighty and slowed him down during the rites that were to be performed. Upon being asked by Lord Vishnu himself, she arose from the great churning of the ocean in the form of Gajalakshmi to offer prayers to Lord Vishnu for the both of them. Along with her emerged two elephants who lustrate her with water as per rituals
In this exclusive Tanjore painting that can elevate the vibrations of any space, she is depicted sitting on a beautiful lotus that is set on a pedestal. She wears a saree with heavy work of gold and emerald, shining heavenly. Above her, there is a canopy of heavy curtains in a kaleidoscope of colours. She is encircled by a garland of pink and yellow flowers, offsetting the embossed gold in the painting prettily. She sits in a padmasana position, the eternal wealth flowing out of her arms, bestowed upon her devotees. With a bejewelled crown on her head, she looks regal and divine. Now, this is sacred beauty and high vibrational divinity illustrated at its best.
