The canvas is roughly divided into two, with the left half Showing Parvati in her home in the Kailash. The right side shows Shiva in his interaction with his son. Parvati had asked Ganesha to stand guard while she bathed. Shiva, not recognizing his son demanded to be let in. On being denied entry, he beheaded Ganesha. On seeing the sight, Parvati went into a frenzy till Shiva placed an elephant head on him and brought him back to life.
Though there is not strict compartmentalization; the story moves in an anti-clock manner. Along with pictorial depictions, the artist has written the explanation of each depiction in Devanagari script. He has used brilliant colours, making this painting a visually delightful narration of one of the most interesting episodes of the Shiva Purana.
