Using pure colours like blue, orange, green and yellow, the artist creates a colourful magic on a small canvas. His theme shifts from the depiction of royalty and nature to a simple household. Giving credence to the theme are ordinary articles in the foreground and the background.
The man, seated on a low bed, which has no ornamentation, invites the lady to sit besides him. The lady stops in her activity to look back at him. With the result, both the faces are shown in profile, highlighting their perfect features. The lady wears brilliant coloured clothes and ostentatious jewellery, in stark comparison to the simplicity of the man. She is trying to cover the cage that houses a mynah. At the same time she responds to her man who tugs at her odhini.
The cobalt blue background raises the other bright colours into prominence. The glow from the lamp hanging from the ceiling looks brighter because of it as does the flower vase on a wall shelf. There is as much purity of colour as there is surety of line.
