So obsessed was Shah Jahan with spouse Mumtaz Mahal that he had her portraits painted in abundance. Here, on a hexagonal throne sits the queen, holding a pink rose for her beloved husband. She is bedecked in jewellery as a royal should, complete with a gem-studded crown. She wears an exquisite coat over a long dress. The eyes gaze lovingly at Shah Jahan for whom she extends a flower in her delicate, hennaed hands. A restless smile plays on her lips.
The artist has experimented with unusual colours, using golden colour with abandon. It's a wonder how he has infused expression and emotion into a painting so minute. Wide borders above and below display Persian verses, surrounded by flowers, which are colourful, yet subdued. The floral pattern, though not very prominent, is exquisite on closer observation.
