Maternal love is harder to express pictorially than romantic love; the emotion depending largely on expression alone. The lady, having bathed the child and herself looks refreshing. The semi-clad mother has selective jewellery on her body; her hair pushed back to fall along her back. The features are sharp, with a firm jawline. She has stood her child on a table, showing him his reflection in the mirror. The child, not wanting to be bathed, is still sulking; refusing to smile. He holds a plaything in his hand as he points out towards his mother's queries. The childlike stub features are in contrast to the mother's sharp ones. The artist has been successfully able to bring out the innocence of the child as well as the gentleness and dignity of the mother.
Where the colour palette is concerned, the artist has used earth tones in all their variations. The tan in the background throws the ochre forms in a glow that has an extraordinary tenderness.
