In the past, when means of communication were few, people often travelled for days before reaching their destination. This painting depicts a couple, travelling on foot, with meager luggage carried by the man. The woman is dressed in a flared skirt and a shirt, together with a translucent odhini. She wears jewellery, which is more voluminous, than delicate. She, of perfect features, talks animatedly to the man who is finely dressed in a jama and pyjama, topped by a jacket. Accessories like the waistband and the shoulder cloth can also be seen. Strings of pearls adorn his neck and his turban. Things of urgent requirement are put together in a bundle, which rests on the end of the stick, carried by the man on his shoulder. He is walking ahead of the woman, but turns back to listen attentively to what she says.

The scenery can be viewed, beyond the two travelers, to a long distance – the meandering river, escaping as if from the mountains; the subtley shaded blue sky standing guard; a temple or two can also be seen which may have acted as a resting place for wary travellers. What is outstanding in this painting is the absolute colour contrast in the palette of the background and the protagonists. The couple is painted in traditional colors where as the form and shading of the background is essentially contemporary.
