In later Mughal period, paintings were no longer produced for the sole edification of the emperor; instead the leading families found it fashionable to keep in their service painters whom they employed in either ornamenting the walls of their houses with pictures, or immortalizing the features of the chief members. Moreover, in the selection of subject matter, there appears a growing desire for the strange and fantastic rather than the beautiful.

There is a warm intimacy between man and animal. Here the dog rushes to greet his master who is relaxing after a hard day at the court. He is resting against a bolster, siting on the ground in a casual posture. He is wearing a white angarakha and green pajamas. The long 'patka' (sash at the waist) and the style of the turban suggest the fashion prevalent during Aurangzeb's reign. He is wearing long strings of pearls. A dagger is tucked in the sash. The turban has a band with a decorative plume. Close to him lie a tray holding a wine casket and tumblers, and a bowl of snacks.

Dogs and puppies conjure up the frolic and play of childhood and going by the expression on the man's face, he is mighty pleased to see his pet. The manner in which the dog licks his master's face and he reciprocates the affection by caressing him shows that they share an emotional dependence on each other.

This miniature exhibits refined drawing and coloring. There is a tendency towards simplification of style; the composition is less complex, space more flattened and the theme alive and exciting.
