Mantra in Tibetan Buddhism are powerful syllables bestowed upon the follower by a great Guru or master, which empower their journey to enlightenment, by strengthening their ritual mediation. The beginning of an initiate’s quest for wisdom happens with the receiving of a Mantra, usually dedicated to a particular Bodhisattva or a Buddhist deity, whose form is envisioned during dhyana.
Using soothing hues and a tedious technique, this Thangka presents a Mantra Mandala, depicting the endless flow of energy that happens during the chanting of a syllable. Originating from a golden lotus at the center which carries the seed syllable, the rings of syllables move symmetrically to the outer world, as an artistic representation of the experience of Dhyana. The shaded blue lotus petal patterns outside the circles of Mantra recreate the blooming of the lotus of inner wisdom, highlighted by a golden outline and framed by floral bunches and a brilliant red, a color symbolic of the flow of pure energy.
