“Mantra” or syllables in the religious traditions of the East, are potent sounds, whose repetition is the path to unveiling supreme truths of the Universe. Each syllable is composed of alphabets and sounds which create ripples of energy in the inner as well as external world of the practitioners, cleansing both, and readying the heart for receiving the light of pure wisdom.
Tibetan Buddhism or Vajrayana Buddhism emphasizes Mantras in each aspect of a practitioner's life- from initiation to achievement of Buddha’s state. In ritual mediation, mantras are chanted constantly to achieve a state of unwavering stillness, where ties with iccha or desires and relationships of the world are severed and one becomes the receiver of enlightened truth.
The philosophy of the steady chant of a Mantra is visualized in an enchanting manner in this Mantra Mandala, where the syllable forms multiple unbroken circles, culminating in a blooming lotus, which in Buddhism is a symbol of enlightenment. The lotus motif has been followed further, with fine petal details visible in the shading of blue all around the Mantra-lotus. On the four sides of the Mandala are the Buddhist Endless Knot motif, one of the Ashtamangala or eight auspicious signs. This motif is representative of the flow and steadiness that exists in the universe, one of the key principles of Buddhist thought. With symbols and colors infusing the Thangka with a sacred harmoniousness, this Mandala is the ideal map for an initiate to enter the realm of heavenly wisdom.
