Lord Krishna is the source of all pleasure and the cause of all causes. Although He is the Supreme Lord, with His inconceivable potency, He descended on the earth in Dwapar Yuga as an ordinary child and performed transcendental pastimes to engage with His beloved devotees and attract the fallen souls into God consciousness. His unrealistic activities were always an astonishment for everyone around Him. Whoever reads or hears Krishna’s sweet Vrindavan pastimes simply goes into the state of trance and experiences the highest form of pleasure.
He whose beauty exceeds even that of the thousands of cupids and whose remembrance gives the highest form of pleasure, is portrayed in this beautiful Tanjore painting in His childhood form. Since little Krishna was fond of stealing and eating butter from the houses of gopis of Vrindavan, He was lovingly called by the name “Makhanchor”. When the gopis would complain to Mother Yashoda about the naughty activities of Krishna, she would chastise Him and then He would make a pitiable face. Seeing His innocence, Mother Yashoda’s heart would melt away and she would let Him eat the freshly churned butter. Here, Makhan chor Krishna is depicted stealthily sitting on the floor of a house of a gopi trying to eat butter. Krishna’s bodily features are very attractive; the soft and gentle smile on His moonlike face is sweeter than honey, His eyes appear like the sun and moon, His eyebrows are like the arrows that pierce everyone’s hearts softly. He is clad in a short-length dhoti and adorned with several jewels on His transcendental body which has bluish hue. He places His flute on one side and keeps a big butter pot in front of Him and now checks if someone is coming to catch Him. Whoever reads or hear this wonderful pastime of Krishna, falls in love with Him and goes into state of trance because Krishna and His pastimes are non-different. The fact that this painting has been majorly embellished with pure gold coating and sequences of shining stones is really praiseworthy. This feature of Tanjore style artwork makes it stand out from the ordinary ones.
