The gorgeous Yashoda clasps little Gopala in Her strong, youthful arms. Her dress, both the saree and the blouse, are made by layering pure gold over solid gessowork. It glitters against Her roseate complexion, bringing out the glow of motherhood in Her every feature. From the adornments in Her hair that hold it back in a bun, to those on the rest of Her body, the gold embellishment is inlaid with red and green stones resembling rubies and emeralds.
The dusky Gopala nestles against the bosom of His mother. Their faces bear a twin composure of innocence and harmony. The eyes are lifelike; the tints of human complexion, so realistic as to invite the onlooker’s touch.
Such a skilfully made Tanjore painting is qualified to be a collector’s item. The pillar and archway along the rightward edge of the painting are indicative of a palatial space. Emerald blue curtains, hemmed in the background, hemmed with gold embellishment, add to the luxury of the composition.
