Buddhism is a world religion with a historical founder who by becoming enlightened discovered and taught a way to salvation. With the Buddha image, the human figures for the first time in history of art came to be invested with supreme spiritual and moral values.

Using the technique of batik, the artist has impeccably portrayed the image of Maitreya. He is the future Buddha. He is not a Buddha yet. He will be born as a Manushi Buddha 5000 yrs. after the death of Sakyamuni Gautama. He is represented as an Indian prince with all the Boddhisattva ornaments. His hair is curling as they are tied in a top knot. He wears a red angavastram, the ends of which are flowing upwards. In his hand he holds a kalasa which is round in shape. The other hand is raised in a gesture of a blessing. He sits with his legs folded in a manner that the soles of the feet are close to each other. The asana that he is seated on is padma, the lotus seat. In Hindu and Buddhist texts, lotus is considered to be sacred and a symbol of purity.

Besides the theme what attracts one to this work is the colour scheme. The artist seems fascinated by the introduction of novel colours in this traditional art. He has experimented with the purples, neon orange and greens and reds which do look a little jarring in this nascent stage of chromatic experimentation.
