During the Sikh period, the visual arts, music etc flourished and it goes without saying that any development of cultural environment postulates peace, prosperity and aesthetic taste of the patron. It holds true for the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

In a regal posture sits Ranjit Singh admonishing a young prince who looks down, in a gesture of respect. Ranjit Singh, sitting in royal ease, with feet resting on a low stool, wears a loosely tied turban. His grey moustaches and flowing beard, though a part of his personality, lend grace to this monochromatic painting. He places his hand on the long gilded sword. His gaze is directed at the young one whose body language seems apologetic, as though deserving the reprisal that he receives from Ranjit Singh. He is also regally attired with his sword tucked at his waistband. His dress cannot conceal the childhood, which peeps from his chubby hands. His features are sharp and shapely with a promise to turn him into a handsome young man.
