This portrait belongs to one of the carnivores of the family felidae. The figure is static and still as a result of emphasis on the representation of details, i.e. firm lines describing the anatomy of the animal and other definite details like the tail, the paws etc. Nevertheless, it is a work of deep study imbued with realism. The features and expression of the face reminds one of the bigger member of the cat family but the tail contradicts any similarity that may be there. The penetrating look in the eyes, the alert ears show that the animal is anticipating danger anytime.
The background constitutes an important aspect in the composition of this painting. The naturalistic trees swaying in the wind and the undulating lush green mounds show the animal's natural habitat. The insignificantly painted goat in the distance conveys its victim in the food chain. There is not much difference in the colors of the sky and ground - everything is in dull green. The maturity and refinement of the line represents the high renaissance of the Mughal School. This tautly modeled and glowingly sleek animal presents a remarkably realistic picture.
