This tranquillizing Tanjore painting portrays Lord Vishnu who is the predominating deity of the mode of goodness (Sattva Guna) and therefore, sustains and maintains the entire Universe. Goddess Lakshmi, also known as Shri, is the eternal consort and internal potency of the Lord, the maintainer, and the sustainer of the entire Universe. Hence, Lakshmi is also associated with Sattva Guna and is always engaged in His loving service. She is revered as the Goddess of fortune and blesses her devotees with wealth and prosperity. She is also among the divine triad known as Tridevi that includes Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Parvati as well. Tridevi is given great importance in Shaktism.
In His abode Vaikuntha, the place of no miseries lies Shesha Shayi Vishnu on the coils of Ananta Shesha or Sheshanaag in the ocean of milk. The multiple hoods form a huge canopy above Lord’s head for His protection. He calmly lies on His right side and His soft feet touch the pure full-blown lotus. Clad in a pitambara (bright yellow) dhoti down to His ankles and adorned with a necklace containing the effulgent Kaustubha gem, the Lord looks just like the glowing Sun. While He lays, the Goddess of fortune (Goddess Lakshmi) attired in a red saree, serves His lotus feet with immense love and devotion. She holds a lotus in Her hand that represents the purity of consciousness. Lord Vishnu’s body complexion resembles the color of fresh monsoon clouds ready to pour the water of blessings on His devotees. Note how precisely and beautifully this painting has been embellished with pure gold studded with shining stones in order to accentuate its aesthetic look. Finally, the Sudarshan Chakra, Panchajanya conch shell, and a wide and bright tilaka (Urdhva Pundra) which are the signs of Lord Vishnu have been marked in the background.
