Sri Vishnu in Hindu dharma is the most powerful, omnipresent preserver of the Universe, who guards dharma and the passage of time, sustaining all life forms, with the help of his twin energies and wives- Sridevi (Lakshmi) and Bhudevi (goddess Earth). The two goddesses accompany Vishnu in his celestial and earthly Lilas, always being on his side as divine mothers of his children.
This visually rich Tanjore painting, infused with the choicest colors and traditional iconography, presents Vishnu enthroned on the coils of Shesha, adorned and positioned in the manner of a supreme sovereign. His blissful blue form is ornamented with Pitambara (yellow garment) and floral garland. Mirroring the splendor of their beloved, Sridevi and Bhudevi flank him, sharing the throne with him.
Sridevi, the goddess of abundance and wealth is attired in a golden saree and Bhudevi is wrapped in a green saree, symbolising the fertility of earth.
Paying obeisance to the Lord of Vaikuntha, Lord Hanuman and Garuda (Vishnu’s bird mount) sit in a devotional manner in the foreground of the Thanjavur, instilling reverence in the heart of the onlooker for the eternal preserver Lord.
